Description Schmallenberg virus is an insect-borne viral disease of cattle, sheep and goats. After infection of the dam by a biting insect, it results in-utero infection of the foetus causing congenital abnormalities of aborted animals and in animals born alive or dead. Also neurological signs may be seen in live offspring. Schmallenberg virus is not considered a public health risk.
