- African Swine Fever (ASF) was detected wild boars for the first time in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, approximately 200km north from the closest confirmed cases, and a move closer to borders with the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark.
- No outbreaks of ASF have ever been detected in Ireland but it continues to cause significant impacts on pig industries in affected countries across mainland Europe and worldwide.
- Humans can play an important role in spreading ASF to new regions.
- Food waste infected with the ASF virus consumed by pigs, represents the most significant risk pathway for a disease incursion into Ireland.
