Bluetongue Virus Update No.7 of 2024 (pdf 472Kb)
- Bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3) confirmed on 34 premises across England in sheep and cattle since first confirmed outbreak on 26th August 2024 (as of 09/09/2024)
- Import of live ruminants from Great Britain has remained suspended since the disease was detected in England last November
- BTV-3 continues to spread on mainland Europe with The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany continuing to report outbreaks of the disease. Since the beginning of August, the disease has also been confirmed in France, Denmark and Luxembourg
- Importers of livestock from mainland Europe must be aware that due to continued spread of disease to new areas, livestock purchased may find themselves in a situation where they cannot be certified for movement to Ireland due to their inability to meet the relevant certification requirements
- DAFM urges livestock keepers, veterinary practitioners and other relevant stakeholders to remain vigilant as current temperatures allow increased midge activity and Bluetongue transmission risk
- Bluetongue is a notifiable disease; Any suspicion of disease must be reported to the local Regional Veterinary Office (RVO) without delay
