Bluetongue Virus Update No.8 of 2024

 

  • Bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3) has been confirmed on 107 premises across England in sheep and cattle since first confirmed outbreak on 26th August 2024 (as of 30/09/2024)
  • The Department for Environment Food & Rural affairs (DEFRA) in Great Britain has extended BTV restriction zones. The restricted zone now extends along the whole of the east of England.
  • Two cases of BTV-3 have been detected outside this restriction zone: in Bath, North East Somerset and in Gwynedd in northwest Wales.

 

  • Import of live ruminants from Great Britain continue to remained suspended.

 

  • BTV-3 continues to spread, across several countries in mainland Europe.
  • Importers of livestock from mainland Europe must be aware that due to continued spread of disease to new areas, livestock purchased may find themselves in a situation where they cannot be certified for movement to Ireland due to their inability to meet the relevant certification requirements.

 

        DAFM urges livestock keepers, veterinary practitioners and other relevant stakeholders to remain vigilant.

 

        Bluetongue is a notifiable disease; Any suspicion of disease must be reported to the local Regional Veterinary Office (RVO) without delay
