Foot and Mouth Disease Update 1 of 2026

*PLEASE CONSULT THE BELOW DOCUMENTATION*

  • Foot and Mouth Disease has been confirmed in the Republic of Cyprus in February 2026.
    • This is the first time FMD has been confirmed in the Republic of Cyprus since 2007.
  • Whilst there will be no livestock transported from Cyprus, given this development, we urge all hauliers to prioritise the importance of biosecurity, cleaning and disinfection of vehicles especially those returning from abroad when importing livestock and products of animal origin in order to protect Ireland’s livestock industry.

  • DAFM wishes to inform and update all livestock hauliers on the circulation of exotic disease threats and remind them of important role they play in keeping exotic disease out of Ireland. Remain vigilant in relation to unexplained disease syndromes and report suspicions of exotic diseases to the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine.
  • Foot and mouth disease (FMD) caused by the foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV), is one of the most highly contagious diseases of livestock.
  • FMDV affects several animal species including cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, deer and other cloven-hoofed animals (animals with a divided hoof).
  • Although equines are not susceptible to Foot and mouth disease, the virus could still potentially be mechanically transmitted via transportation of equines, and hence this information is of importance to all hauliers and livestock keepers.
