Listed/Notifiable Diseases
Diseases subject to regulation in Ireland include WOAH listed diseases and Notifiable diseases.
A notifiable disease is any disease that is required by law to be reported to government authorities. Notifiable diseases are listed in the Notification and Control of Diseases Affecting Terrestrial Animals Regulations of 2016.
The WOAH is the international organisation for animal health. An WOAH listed disease is one of international concern, for which Ireland is obliged to submit information such as the presence, absence or number of cases in the country to the WOAH every year.
There is a large overlap between Listed and Notifiable diseases. However, some listed diseases are not notifiable in Ireland. Also some diseases which are notifiable in Ireland are not WOAH listed diseases, these include certain diseases which are of importance for human health but of limited importance for animal health.
