Disease name Avian paramyxovirus (including Newcastle disease and paramyxovirus of pigeons)
Animal Health Law Category if applicable A, D, E
Species affected Avian
Description There are ten serotypes of avian paramyxoviruses designated APMV-I to APMV-10. Newcastle disease (ND) is caused by virulent strains of avian paramyxovirus type 1 (APMV-1) of the genus Avulavirus belonging to the family Paramyxoviridae. WOAH define Newcastle Disease as (ND) as an infection of poultry* caused by Newcastle disease virus (NDV), but it may also affect other captive birds including pet, zoo and wild birds. Clinical signs will depend on strain virulence, with highly virulent strains causing severe respiratory, gastrointestinal and neurological disease. Many strains remain asymptomatic or cause milder signs, but sometimes they can evolve into highly virulent strains. Occasional human ND associated disease (conjunctivitis, pneumonia) has been reported in humans after exposure to large quantities of virus. Only infection with Newcastle disease virus is categorised by the Animal Health Law A, D, E
