Description Hendra virus is an emerging viral disease of horses and humans in Australia. The virus is shed by fruit bats to horses and causes severe respiratory and neurological disease, with a high mortality rate. Hendra virus in horses can manifest with a variety of symptoms including sudden death, neurological signs or colic like episodes among others. Hendra virus has spread from affected horses to humans, with subsequent human fatalities reported.
