Description Mpox virus is a zoonotic member of the Orthopoxvirus genus. The primary wildlife reservoirs are small rodents and squirrels in the rain forests of Africa, mostly in western and central areas. Occasionally disease can spill-over into primates and other species and spread and spread outside of endemic areas, most commonly associated with movement of infected hosts. People can become exposed in three main ways: through bites or scratches from infected animals; through contact with meat or body fluids from infected animals; through close contact with infected humans. Clinical signs can vary depending with species and other factors, but can include general and cutaneous disease.
